As part of a recent partnership to support a healthy environment for growth and development for children in Tennessee, Optum Rx teamed with TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid program, to provide free diapers for Tennessee children through the pharmacy benefit. In the first six months of the partnership, 100,000 diaper claims were processed at the pharmacy. Providing diapers helps prevent diaper rash and infections, and can reduce emergency department visits. The diaper benefit also supports working parents, who often need to supply diapers to keep their child enrolled in daycare or an early childhood education program.

Details
This program provides 100 diapers per month at participating pharmacies across the state for children under the age of 2 enrolled in TennCare or CoverKids.
- To receive the diapers, parents or guardians must show the child’s pharmacy ID card (or the mother’s pharmacy ID card for newborns) at a participating pharmacy.
- Through the Optum Rx pharmacy benefit, TennCare will cover select diaper brands and various types and sizes of diapers. There is no prescription needed, and no cost or copay to the member.
“We recognize the importance of the pharmacy and pharmacists’ crucial role in providing care for members, and are committed to supporting the well-being of the youngest Tennesseans and their families by ensuring convenient access to essential items, like diapers, through the pharmacy. As a practicing pediatrician myself, I’m thrilled that this program supports Tennesseans with vital care and resources that can make a significant difference in a child’s health, as well as the health and well-being of mothers and parents.”

This program is part of an ongoing commitment to improve the pharmacy experience for consumers and to support the vitality of pharmacies, as well as to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. Optum Rx recently expanded its Bridge to Healthy Baby program, which provides pregnant mothers with a baby kit that includes maternal fetal care and baby products, as well as a wallet card for the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline to support a healthier pregnancy. And in 2024, Optum Rx announced several other initiatives that support independent pharmacies and the people they serve.
