Why did you decide to pursue medicine as a career?

I’ve only ever wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. We had close family friends whose children had a rare cancer so that was likely a foundational reason. I stay in medicine because I love the varied aspects of my role; being an educator, preventing disease, treating disease.

Had you not chosen medicine, what would you do?

On hard days I fantasize that I chose running a little bed and breakfast as a career instead, but honestly, I can’t imagine not being in medicine.

If you were to change medical specialties, what would you choose?

I am a Family Medicine physician, and I think it’s the best specialty! However, my second choice would have been Emergency Medicine.

How is most of your time spent away from work?

I enjoy being active so time away from work is often cycling, kayaking, or digging in my garden. I enjoy cooking and reading a good book as well.

Describe your perfect day off?

My perfect day off would be spent at the lake with a long bike ride and then some time on the water, either paddleboarding or kayaking.

Tell me the best part about being a physician?

I love connecting with people to provide education and solve problems.

What would you change about health care and the practice of medicine to make it work better?

I would advocate for affordable universal health care coverage for everyone, and I would ensure that there is appropriate funding for social programs such that the burden doesn’t fall on the healthcare system.
