Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating diversity and empowering voices at UnitedHealth Group

Hispanic Heritage Month is a vibrant and essential period of celebration, offering us a chance to recognize the cultural, societal and organizational contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. At UnitedHealth Group, we’re honored to celebrate this month with dedicated team members like Michelle and Karla, who champion diversity and inclusivity both within and outside our organization.

Michelle’s insight: The power of questions & sharing Hispanic heritage

Michelle underscores a fundamental truth, "We Hispanics love to share our culture." Her perspective urges everyone to not just acknowledge but actively participate in the celebration. "Ask questions," she encourages, emphasizing that understanding and communicating these cultural insights can lead to meaningful dialogues and enriching experiences.

Whenever new initiatives are considered at UnitedHealth Group, Michelle believes in ensuring that the Hispanic perspective is never overlooked. "Are Hispanics being considered in this initiative? Is this something that will help bring health equality to this demographic?" By asking these questions, Michelle demonstrates the importance of representation and inclusivity in the workplace.

Karla’s journey: Embracing heritage & strengthening community ties

With seven years under her belt at Optum, Karla cherishes Hispanic Heritage Month for the value it adds to the American narrative. Being from sunny St. Petersburg, Florida, she beautifully encapsulates the spirit of the month by encouraging everyone to immerse themselves in the rich cultural diversity the Hispanic community brings. As she playfully admits, "As a good, food-loving Latina, I expect to find a new recipe or maybe visit a new restaurant."

More than just a celebration of heritage, Karla highlights the broader impact of being part of the UNIDOS Employee Resource Group (ERG) at UnitedHealth Group. It has not only allowed her to connect with other Latinos and allies but has also offered her a platform to mentor and guide future leaders.

Championing inclusivity: UnitedHealth Group’s Employee Resource Groups

Diversity and inclusivity aren’t just buzzwords at UnitedHealth Group; they’re woven into the very fabric of our corporate culture. As seen on our inclusion and diversity page, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Employee Resource Groups, like the UNIDOS ERG, play a pivotal role in this. They provide platforms for like-minded individuals to connect, share experiences and contribute to the organization's larger goals. As Karla shared, "Being a part of the UNIDOS ERG has given me an opportunity to connect with other Latinos and allies on a professional level. Being able to learn how we can serve each other better, serve our communities better, and share our mission of making the health care system better for everyone is what being a part of the UNIDOS ERG has done for me."

UnitedHealth Group remains steadfast in its commitment to inclusivity and ensuring that our team is as diverse as the communities we serve. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re reminded of the unique perspectives, stories and values that each member brings to the table, making our collective mission even more meaningful.
