Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating diversity and connections at UnitedHealth Group

Hispanic Heritage Month is a vibrant time of celebration, offering us a chance to recognize and learn about the cultural, societal and organizational contributions of Hispanic and Latino/Latina communities. At UnitedHealth Group, we're honored to celebrate this month with dedicated team members and communities like our Unidos Employee Resource Group (ERG).

The importance of Employee Resource Groups

Diversity and inclusion aren't just buzzwords at UnitedHealth Group; they're central to our corporate culture. We pride ourselves on fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Employee Resource Groups, like the Unidos ERG, play a pivotal role in this. They provide platforms for like-minded individuals to connect, share experiences and contribute to the organization's larger goals.

Monica G.M., a senior network account manager at UnitedHealthcare and member of Unidos, echoes this sentiment:

"It has made me realize that I have a family within UnitedHealthcare. It has also shown me how UnitedHealthcare has made the Latino/Latina community feel included within the organization, which I love to see."

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for reflection, celebration and education. As Valerie C., another Unidos member explains,

"Hispanic Heritage Month means celebrating our culture, our unique backgrounds and the contributions Latinos/Latinas have made in the United States."

For many, this celebration extends beyond the workplace. Monica shares, "At home, my family and I enjoy different dishes that are an essential part of our Puerto Rican heritage, which brings us closer to the island even though we are not there."

Sara D., a communications co-pillar lead for Unidos, adds,

"For me, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is about reconnecting with my roots and helping to educate others about Latino/Latina culture."

The impact of Unidos

The Unidos Employee Resource Group has become more than just a workplace group, as Valerie expresses, "What I love most about the Unidos Employee Resource Group is the people—the members. We have truly built a community that feels like family and home."

This sense of belonging extends beyond the workplace, inspiring members to engage with their local communities. Monica shares, "Participating in Unidos has also encouraged me to engage in my local community in Orlando, where the city plans various events for the Latino/Latina community."

Creating an inclusive work culture

We strive to create spaces that foster diverse connections like we do in Unidos. Sara notes, "UnitedHealth Group as an organization has been working to create an inclusive work culture where we can all feel valued and heard."

In 2024, UnitedHealth Group was awarded a place on the Forbes list of the Best Employers for Diversity. This award, based on extensive employee surveys and research into diversity-related best practices, highlights companies that are fostering an inclusive workplace.

The value of cultural heritage

For many Unidos members, their cultural background is an integral part of both their personal and professional lives. Valerie reflects, "My cultural background has influenced both my personal and professional life in many ways, including being bilingual in Spanish, having a strong work ethic thanks to my parents, and having a unique understanding of different values, viewpoints and cultures."

Sara echoes this sentiment: "My heritage as a Mexican American woman is a fundamental part of who I am, and it is evident in everything I do in one way or another."
