Making Health Care Work Smarter For Everyone
Explore how we’re using artificial intelligence safely and responsibly to create efficiencies and simplify experiences.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can help make health care work smarter for our customers, patients, providers and consumers. At UnitedHealth Group, our teams are focused on developing and deploying tools that empower people with better insights, more timely information and better experiences — while keeping safety, privacy and transparency at the forefront of our thinking. At the same time, we seek to ensure that AI and ML models are used safely and responsibly to enable and support — but not replace — critical human decision-making.
“As physicians and clinicians, we are acutely aware of our industry’s need to continually improve the ways we can help people live healthier lives. Technology is helping us reshape the future of medicine and AI is now at the center of conversation.
"Imagine a world where clinical processes and workflows are streamlined, simpler and more efficient; a world where we can offer clinicians and health care workers more personalized insights and more time back to better serve their patients. This is the future we envision through the intentional and responsible use of AI in our offerings. Our commitment and mission to help people live healthier lives and help make the health system work better extends beyond innovation; it is rooted in the belief that AI, when used safely and responsibly, can be a force for good in health care and enable us to think about our work in a different way, leading to better, smarter care that will significantly improve patient outcomes.”

“We are at the cusp of a new era. AI is the most transformative technology of our time and improving health care is perhaps the most important consequential job that AI will work on. To put it simply, Generative AI can be viewed as a superpower, an enabling technology, which will help us solve complex problems and advance quality solutions that help improve the health system for providers, patients … for everyone.
"At UnitedHealth Group, we're using our AI superpowers in three core ways: we are simplifying the administration processes (including consumer experiences); building new data science platforms; and offering medical and clinical insights to help physicians and clinicians focus on what they do best.
"Let’s talk about real people and real stories. Jacob, like many of our members, needs to find care for his daughter whose stomach hurts. Our AI-enhanced search experience helps him locate the best care, faster by using our data to personalize his search results, providing him with high-quality, low-cost, in-network providers who specialize in the exact care his daughter needs.
"Now, let’s imagine Lisa, a nurse practitioner, who is making a routine house call visit. Her goal is to provide the right care for the right person at the right time. In a capability we have developed to identify health risks, Lisa pulls her patient’s profile up on her tablet and sees that the patient may be at risk for type 2 diabetes. Lisa can now determine if an A1C test is appropriate. AI is supporting Lisa with information, helping reduce the likelihood of a missed diagnosis, not making a clinical decision. Lisa makes the final decision.
"We are integrating AI into our organization with hundreds of use cases and stories at scale, with pragmatism, enthusiasm, and above all, responsibility. We’re committed to identifying ways AI/ML can help us solve the health care consumer’s most frustrating pain points, while creating efficiencies that enable clinicians to practice at the top of their license.”

Advancing Health Care with AI
While safety, privacy and transparency are at the forefront of our thinking, AI is helping to achieve our mission by:
To achieve this, we've built a team of world-class AI/ML experts from around the globe – premiere researchers and thinkers across medical, academic and private organizations, as well as external partners – to responsibly and safely deploy innovation at scale.
Using AI Responsibly
AI/ML are important technologies with the potential to positively impact health care, but we believe they must be explainable, expert-informed and used responsibly. Through our Responsible Use of AI (RUAI) Program, we consider, identify, and address potential risk of unintended consequences that could impact our members, patients, customers, or consumers. This effort prioritizes clinical oversight and establishes standards for developers and data scientists to ensure our tools are developed and implemented in a way that ensures accuracy, fairness, security, privacy, ethics, and transparency.
